Timetables and Fares

Wellington is currently in Alert level 2; we will be running to our full timetable with some restrictions (including travel to Matiu/Somes Island).

Travel to Matiu/Somes Island

Due to the current restrictions at “Delta level 2”, there are significant capacity limitations for those travelling to the island on each sailing (usually 30 but sometimes 15). We are managing this by requiring you pre-book tickets to the island before travelling with us. There are no capacity restrictions for travelling between Queens Wharf and Days Bay. To book, email reception@eastbywest.co.nz with the date, preferred sailing time and number of people you would like to travel with and you will be sent a booking request if there is still space.

If you are travelling from Queens Wharf we do recommend being at the ticket office 30 minutes before departure time, especially if it is nice weather.

Under 5 year olds are free.

*Child: 5 – 15 years old, secondary school students aged 16 – 19 in school uniform or with valid school ID.

Concession rate applies to those with total mobility cards (1 carer travels free with any person carrying total mobility card).      

Student: Full time tertiary student with valid ID

Family: 2 adults and up to 4 children.

Please note the 10-trip tickets cannot be used for more than 2 people at a time.

Accessibility Concession: Concession tickets apply to those that present a Total Mobility Card.

One carer per passenger with Total Mobility Card travels free.

 Supergold card holders travel free between 9am - 3pm and after 6.30pm Monday - Friday and all day weekends

and public holidays (Goldcard holders still need to collect a ticket from the office if it is open).


Can I make a booking?

Under Alert level 2, bookings are currently required for trips to Matiu/Somes Island. Click here to read more.

We do not take bookings for travel between Queens Wharf or Days Bay but if you are travelling with more than 15 people you can get in touch to advise us of your plans.

How do I purchase tickets?

If you are travelling from Queens Wharf you can purchase tickets from the office between 9am and 4.30pm Mon – Fri and between 9am and 2.30pm on weekends / public holidays, tickets can be purchased onboard all other times. 

If you are travelling from Days Bay, all tickets can be purchased on board. We have Cash, EFTPOS and Credit Card facilities on board.

Where is the East by West office located?

The ticket office is located in between Portofino and Master Kong restaurants on the Wellington Waterfront and the boat departs right opposite the office. There is no office at Days Bay. 

Can I take bikes and luggage on board?

Yes, you can take bikes and luggage on board and there is no extra charge for this. If you require assistance for heavier luggage (and e-bikes in particular), please bring this to our crews’ attention and ask for help. There may be a delay with assistance if we are busy as crew will need to disembark passengers first so we appreciate your patience. If you are planning on travelling in a group with 10 or more bikes, please let us know prior to your travel. 

Can I take dogs on board?

Yes, you can take dogs on board and there is no extra charge for this. Dogs do need to be on a lead and must be kept on the top deck or the back of the bottom deck if it is raining. No animals are allowed on Matiu/Somes Island. 

Can I take wheelchairs on board? 

Although there is limited capability for wheelchair access, the crew will make every effort to enable wheelchair users to come on board. Motorised wheelchairs are too difficult as crew cannot lift them on board. Usually (depending on tidal conditions) top deck access is available as the wheelchair can be wheeled or carried up the gangway and this allows disembarkation from the top deck on outlying wharves.
