The East By West 2013 “Biennale”.
Murray Gibbons a local Eastbourne identity and artist came up with the idea asking local artists to paint a photograph of the Bay he had taken from the hills on a superb evening with the ferry approaching the wharf in the distance.
Local artists Jacky Pearson, Alex Cooper and Kate Booth all jumped at the fun opportunity and the four artist works including Murray’s were displayed on the ferry for a week and our patrons had the opportunity to vote for their favourite piece.
Voting was brisk and popular with over 100 votes casted. The winner was a joint affair with tied votes for both Jacky Pearson and Kate Booth. So on the 6.30pm sailing from Queens Wharf on Wednesday December 4th, the skipper stopped the ferry mid harbour and the award ceremony took place with Jeremy Ward, Managing Director of East By West Ferries presenting the awards!
All the works are available for sale by contacting the artists on their emails below.
Murray also took the opportunity to donate to the ferry a framed set of ferry tickets used by his father, the renown Clarrie Gibbons back in 1933. The ferries at the time being the Duchess or the Muritai. There were still 3 trips to be used on the concession card and Murray was hoping to cash them in!!! These historic tickets are now on display on the Cobar Cat.
Also all votes cast were entered into a draw for a free ten trip ticket on the ferries and the winner was Lisa Smellie. Congratulations Lisa!!
